We received an invitation to visit Exceed Physical Culture in TriBeca so how could we turn it down? Confession. It's been a LONG time since I've taken a high intensity interval training class (HIIT) class. I was a little scared. The studio is ground level and bright and airy. Maggie, the front desk staff, welcomed me in and gave me a quick tour of the space which includes a training room downstairs for private and semi-private clients and a clean locker room equipped with showers and toiletries.
Marianna, our instructor, greeted me with with open arms. By looking into our work space, I saw kettle bells, "ROGUE" wooden boxes, rowing machines, TRX equipment (which I've heard about so much about but never experienced.) It was time to get busy and I wasn't quite sure what would happen next. After a quick warm-up, it was time to get busy. We split up into groups- my 'teammates' were such strong, fit women who I've heard visit the space often. I'm inspired. My first round included burpees and jump ups on that ROGUE box. Wow. OK. Next onto rowing, then TRX, medicine balls and lastly kettle bells.
Rinse and repeat. For 3 minutes, 2 minutes, then 1. Switching the exercises up with each circuit. The class was 50 minutes long with a quick cool down. All in all, no joke. But I felt accomplished, humbled (and feeling a bit weak!) but also energized for a Monday morning. I'll definitely be back. Mariana knows her stuff and with her pushing us through combined with heart-pumping, get-it-done music, it was the perfect treat.
If you're ready to kick it into high gear, visit this studio at 97 Reade St., or their other location in the Upper East Side at 1477 Third Ave. Then be prepared to SWEAT! PS- if you're in TriBeca, also say hello to my friend Sarin, who also works there, and hooked us up!
