Strong. Powerful. Graceful. Misty Copeland. I know I'm a bit late to this game, but I just watched Misty Copeland's Under Armour Women video and was completely inspired. It took me back to when I was in dancing school and simply felt the pressure to mold a dancer's body myself- long legs (kind of hard at 5'3"!), torso, turnout, bevel the feet, etc. I truly get Misty and love, did I say LOVE? her "badass-ness". To add, she broke the mold and is now a soloist for the American Ballet Theatre. I want to buy a ticket and go to the theater ASAP.
The message is an important and clear one, especially to young girls. Embrace your individuality, believe in yourself, believe in your dreams and follow your heart. If there's a little baby girl in this 9 month belly of mine, that's what I'd like to instill in her and also my four nieces. I know my mom did, so now it's time to pass the torch. We are bombarded with so many mixed messages these days about body image and the like, that it truly disturbs me. Yes, I like to be fit, but more importantly, I prefer to be healthy, empowered, and just a good person inside and out. There are of course daily struggles no matter who you are, but those are the days you push through.
Kudos to Under Armour for scooping Misty up for this campaign, along with a roster of other rock star women including pro soccer player Kelley O'Hara, pro surfer Brianna Cope, pro tennis player Sloane Stephens and world champion downhill skier Lindsay Vonn. I am in awe of all of their stories and hope there will be even more positive messages out there for women, both young and not so young, in the future.
Yes, "I will what I want." Get it, girls.
